I Want a Country - Puppet Design/Fabrication

University of the Arts, Levitt Auditorium

The puppet(s) were not originally written into the script of I Want a Country. My director was very interested in the show ending with a child attempting to find safety in their childhood hero, Superman. The puppet(s) needed to match the rest of the show aesthetic while also not looking specific enough that any audience member could project their own child onto it. I created a smaller puppet to go inside the tent with its parent and then to emphasize the final moments of the show, I designed and made a much bigger version of the same puppet that was able to move its arms. Both puppets were created using a cardboard understructure with papermache built on top and wooden dowels for structural support and a way for the performers to actually puppeteer the bigger of the two. Their bodies were a series of patchwork from various fabric types.
