Mother Courage and Her Children - Assistant Scenic Design

University of the Arts, Caplan Studio Theater

The main scenic piece is Mother Courage’s wagon that her family lives out of and she sells numerous goods and wears from. To make contemporary connections to the piece, the wagon’s base was from pieces of a shopping cart. The goal of the wagon’s design was to make it feel like a Mary Poppin’s bag of sorts, with never-ending supplies and an air of mystery around how all the supplies were stored. The wagon needed to be big enough to hold at least three performers but not too big that it became a nuance backstage when the show was not being performed. Many of the trinkets that were added as dressing to the wagon were included to create recognizable elements to the audience and mimick some of the things one would see on a beloved car.
